Default Fishing for Steelhead?

Anyone fish for steelhead? I need to go to Olympia, Washington sometime in September or October. I can go most any time during that period, so when is best? I see lots of rivers going into the Columbia and I'd be willing to travel 200 miles or so to the east if needed. I could cross over to the Oregon but I would rather not have to buy two non resident licenses. Catching salmon would be a bonus. I've read that steelhead are really hard to catch so is it realistic to expect to do well on my own, or would a guide be in order?
